Arnaud et Jean-Marie Larrieu

  • French Directors, born in Lourdes in 1966 and 1965, respectively.

    Born in the Hautes-Pyrenees, the Larrieu brothers developed a shared passion for the mountains and cinema thanks to their grandfather, himself an amateur cinematographer. After studying philosophy, they shot several short and medium-length films including Summer’s End (1999), and Roland’s Pass (2000) with Mathieu Amalric, selected for the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes. They teamed up again with the actor for three other feature films including their first, A Man, a Real One (2003). In 2005, To Paint or Make Love with Daniel Auteuil and Sabine Azema was selected for competition at Cannes. Then followed Le voyage aux Pyrenees (Directors’ Fortnight, 2008) and Happy End (2009). “Our idea has often been to force a change of scenery for the actors by bringing them to unfamiliar surroundings, all the while changing our own scenery as we watch them evolve in places that are familiar to us”, they explain. They collaborated again with Amalric for the thriller Love is the Perfect Crime in 2014 and directed 21 Nights with Pattie (2015) with Karin Viard and Isabelle Carré, which earned them the Jury Prize for Best Screenplay at the San Sébastian International Film Festival.
