Dario Argento

• Italian director, born in Rome in 1940.
  
  Son of the producer Salvatore Argento, Dario Argento grew up in film studios. Upon his return to Italy, after a field trip to France where he avidly frequented the Cinémathèque française, he launched his career as a film critic. He met Alberto Sordi, for whom he wrote his first script, Scusi, lei è favorevole o contrario? [Pardon, Are You For or Against?] (1966). Then, with Bertolucci, he wrote Once Upon a Time in the West, directed by Sergio Leone (1968). In the tradition of giallos – erotic Italian horror films – in 1970 he directed The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, the first chapter of his “animal trilogy”. Fascinated by the subconscious, Freudian theory, and art, the master of horror and the supernatural with a baroque aesthetic then created his major works in quick succession: Suspiria (1977), Inferno (1980), Tenebrae (1982) and Phenomena (1984). Three films followed in which he entrusted the lead to his daughter Asia: Trauma (1993), The Stendhal Syndrome, and The Phantom of the Opera. His latest film, Dracula 3D (2012) was presented out of competition at Cannes.
