Miguel Gomes

Miguel Gomes

  • Portuguese director, born in Lisbon in 1972.

After studying at the Lisbon Theater and Film School, Miguel Gomes started his career as a film critic for the daily newspaper Pùblico. From 1999 onwards, he directed several short films before embarking on his first feature in 2004 with The Face You Deserve, the story of a thirty-year-old man who refuses to grow up. Next came Our Beloved Month of August (2008), a work combining fiction and documentary that depicts the life of a small mountain village. In 2012, Taboo, a melancholic poem and tribute to Murnau, won the Alfred Bauer Prize at the Berlin Film Festival and earned him international fame. His most recent film, in three parts, The Thousand and One Nights, tells the tale – very freely – of the years of austerity that overwhelmed Portugal. The film was selected for the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2015.  He returns to the Fortnight in 2021 with The Tsugua Diaries, a film shot in confinement in a country house in Portugal during the health crisis.
