Nicole Garcia
French director and actor, born in Oran (Algeria).
Nicole Garcia spent her childhood in Oran. Arriving in France in 1962, she studied philosophy and the dramatic arts, then launched her acting career in theatre. She made a name for herself in film thanks to Let Joy Reign Supreme (Bertrand Tavernier, 1975) then with Rivette, and Resnais in My American Uncle (1979). A major figure of French cinema, she has worked with the finest directors: Blier, De Broca, Lelouch, Sautet, Miller, Rappeneau, or Claire Simon.
She started directing in 1990 with Every Other Weekend. Le Fils préféré (1994) and Place Vendôme (1997) were to follow, starring Catherine Deneuve; The Adversary (2002) with Daniel Auteuil; A View of Love (2009), for which she returned to her Algerian childhood; and Mal de Pierres (2016) with Marion Cotillard. Her films, which she usually writes with Jacques Fieschi, focus on the complexity of human and family relationships. Her latest opus, Lovers, with Stacy Martin, Pierre Niney, and Benoît Magimel was released in 2021, the year she returned to the theatre for Royan, by Marie NDiaye.
