Philippe Garrel

Philippe Garrel

  • A French director born in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1939.

A precocious child of cinema, Philippe Garrel, son of the actor Maurice Garrel, shot his first films from the mid-sixties: his brilliant, incandescent cine-poems named Les Enfants désaccordés (1964), Marie pour mémoire (1967), Le Révélateur (1968, with Bernadette Lafont), or Concentration (1968, a duo with Jean-Pierre Léaud and Zouzou). With the singer Nico by his side, his partner in the seventies, Garrel’s quest for an existence transcended by art took a psychedelic turn (from The Inner Scar in 1971 to L’Enfant secret in 1979). His cinema is attentive to the insurrectional impetus of youth (like that of 1968 in Les Amants réguliers) as well as the intensity of amorous sentiments (The Birth of Love, 1993; Lover for a Day, 2016). His singular working method favours the materiality of 35 mm and an intimate artisanry, involving his family on camera.
