Merry soldiers arrive in the sleepy Transdanubian town. The cynical woman-hunter, Ferdinándy, learns to know doctor Barlay's beautiful wife at a carnival. She lives a happy married life, and the attentions of the lieutenant are all in vain. But during his last secret visit he leaves his gloves there, then wakes up the Barlay-house in the night, drunken and noisy. Therefore, the doctor asks him for a duel. On the day of the dual Barlay is found dead. He has been shot down from behind. Everybody knows who the murderer is, but defending the honour of the uniform is the first priority. The lieutenant's servant's confession is accepted, and the naive Kaál Samu believes Ferdinándy, i.e. that nothing is going to happen to him. Samu continues to believe his master until the moment of his execution. A disgusted lieutenant is discharged, and the regiment moves on to the next town.
