Nyúl Béla, the insignificant teacher of Latin, father of four, writes a study on Hannibal, which states that the war lord became the victim of the revolution in Carthago. A journalist appears at Nyúls', he makes an interview, the family is happy: the bread-and-jam age is over. In the Parliament however, the extreme right wing makes a scandal on the pretext of the paper and Nyúl Béla is dismissed. The teacher pays a visit to his former classmate, the right wing representative Muray. He promises help, but in a great assembly in the Amphiteatrum he already heats the mob against Nyúl. The teacher publicly "becomes converted". He is taken aback by the bursting out enthusiasm of the mob, and falling from the cornice he crashes to his death.
